Emirates SkyCargo has transported the UAE-built Altair-1 earth-observation satellite from Dubai to Los Angeles, completing the airfreight leg ahead of the spacecraft’s scheduled launch in October 2026.
The satellite travelled from Dubai World Central to Los Angeles International Airport aboard an Emirates Boeing 777 freighter. A dedicated cargo team managed the end-to-end movement, with environmental and safety controls applied to a payload that combines optical, infrared, thermal, and radio-frequency sensing with onboard artificial-intelligence processing.
Altair-1 has been developed and manufactured in the UAE by Orbitworks and is the first spacecraft in a planned constellation of 10 satellites. The network is intended to provide earth-observation data for applications including environmental monitoring, disaster response, maritime awareness, land and coastal analysis, and infrastructure and resource assessment.
The physical movement from factory to launch chain is a relatively short part of the programme, but it carries an unusually concentrated risk. Satellite hardware is high value, technically sensitive, difficult to substitute, and tied to launch schedules that cannot necessarily be rearranged around a damaged or delayed shipment.
Handling requirements extend beyond transit time
Specialist aerospace freight is therefore less about moving cargo as quickly as possible than controlling every stage through which it passes. Acceptance, storage, loading, aircraft positioning, security, ground handling, and transfer at destination all have to be planned around a payload that may have strict environmental and handling tolerances.
Emirates SkyCargo has built a dedicated Aerospace and Engineering vertical around that type of work. The carrier says it has moved more than 6,000 tonnes of aerospace and advanced engineering cargo worldwide during 2026, putting satellite movements inside a wider business that includes sensitive and unusually configured engineering freight.
Altair-1 also follows earlier spacecraft handled through the Emirates network. The carrier recently transported Arab Satellite 813 from Dubai towards its launch site near Shanghai, while in 2018 it carried Khalifasat, the first satellite developed and built by UAE engineers, from Dubai to South Korea.
Those consignments are tiny beside the tonnage generated by conventional industrial or consumer supply chains, yet the operational requirement is harder to dilute. One damaged spacecraft cannot be replaced by diverting stock from another warehouse, and a handling failure may affect engineering, insurance, launch, and programme schedules far beyond the immediate freight movement.
Orbitworks itself is part of a growing UAE space-manufacturing base. Established in 2024 at Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi, the company was formed through a partnership between Abu Dhabi-based Marlan Space and San Francisco-headquartered Loft Orbital. Altair-1 is its first commercial satellite to reach this stage of the logistics chain.
Freighter growth supports larger engineering cargo
The movement comes as Emirates SkyCargo expands its dedicated freighter capacity. Since March, the carrier has taken delivery of six new Boeing 777 production freighters and one Boeing 777-300ERSF converted from an Emirates passenger aircraft.
A further four new Boeing 777 freighters and another converted aircraft are due later in 2026. The expanded fleet has allowed Emirates SkyCargo to increase its dedicated freighter network to more than 60 destinations, alongside cargo capacity carried on Emirates passenger services.
That distinction matters for aerospace supply chains because aircraft capacity is not interchangeable. Smaller components may travel comfortably in passenger-aircraft belly holds, while larger engineering hardware, specialist containers, or awkwardly configured loads can require main-deck access, larger cargo doors, or handling arrangements only available through dedicated freighters.
Additional freighter capacity therefore broadens the range of aerospace work a cargo operator can accept rather than simply adding more tonnes to the network. It also gives planners greater flexibility when a sensitive shipment has to connect with a fixed test, integration, or launch schedule at destination.
For satellite manufacturers, those logistics considerations begin well before the aircraft departs. Packaging, environmental monitoring, ground transport, aircraft selection, handling procedures, security, and destination transfer all have to be aligned with the technical requirements of the spacecraft.
The first Altair satellite has now completed its Dubai-Los Angeles movement, leaving Orbitworks to progress towards the planned October launch. Nine additional spacecraft are intended to follow as the constellation develops, giving both the manufacturer and its logistics partners the opportunity to turn the first movement into a repeatable process.
That repeatability will matter more as the programme scales. A one-off satellite movement can be managed as an exceptional project; a constellation requires the exceptional handling to become routine without becoming casual. Emirates SkyCargo’s first Altair movement provides the operating reference against which the next nine shipments can be planned.
