Lufthansa Cargo digitises Frankfurt import customs

Lufthansa Cargo is digitalising Frankfurt import customs through FAIR@Link software. The FRA-OS module is intended to automate parts of consolidated import handling and release eligible shipments to forwarders earlier.

Lufthansa Cargo is introducing FAIR@Link’s FRA-OS module at Frankfurt Airport to digitalise more of the customs process for consolidated imports and shorten the route between cargo arrival and handover to freight forwarders.

The system brings customs information for consolidated shipments together within Frankfurt’s cargo-community platform, allowing parts of the import process to be initiated automatically while providing status information as freight moves through ground handling.

Lufthansa Cargo will initially use the module for selected e-commerce and general cargo passing through the Neutral Freight Transfer Point, or NFÜP, at Frankfurt. The implementation is intended to reduce manual process steps and allow appropriately cleared shipments to move more directly through the import operation.

The significance lies less in the addition of another logistics software platform than in where it is being inserted. Import air cargo passes through a sequence of tightly connected physical and regulatory processes — aircraft unloading, warehouse handling, customs presentation, documentary checks, release, freight handover, and collection by the forwarder or its transport provider.

A delay in any one of those stages can leave time-sensitive cargo sitting on the ground even when the aircraft arrived on schedule. Customs information and shipment-status data are therefore part of the physical handling process rather than an administrative layer running alongside it.

FAIR@Link is designed as a neutral digital platform for participants in the Frankfurt air-cargo community. Its FRA-OS module supports customs-compliant handling of consolidated imports by bringing the information required for processing into a common workflow.

For Lufthansa Cargo, one of the operational benefits is the possibility of deferred customs presentation. Eligible freight can take a more direct route towards release and handover rather than waiting for a separate customs step within the carrier’s handling facility before moving to the NFÜP.

That matters particularly for consolidated airfreight. A single shipment unit can contain goods belonging to multiple consignees, each with its own commercial information, customs status, and onward destination. Physical consolidation improves aircraft utilisation, but the individual consignments still have to be separated correctly within the information flow.

Where those records are incomplete or exchanged through disconnected systems, handlers may have to wait for clarification before releasing cargo. A platform combining shipment status with customs data can give the parties involved an earlier indication of whether goods are ready to move or require intervention.

The first application to e-commerce and general cargo also gives the system two very different operating environments. E-commerce can involve large numbers of relatively small consignments and substantial data volumes, while general air cargo covers a wider range of shipment sizes, customers, handling requirements, and customs arrangements.

Automation therefore does not mean removing human oversight from the process. The more practical objective is to let compliant, correctly documented shipments pass through routine stages with less manual handling while directing staff towards exceptions that genuinely require attention.

That distinction matters in a high-volume cargo operation. When every shipment follows the same manual sequence regardless of risk or documentation quality, straightforward freight consumes handling capacity that could instead be focused on problematic cargo.

For forwarders, earlier customs visibility can improve collection planning. A truck dispatched before cargo is releasable risks waiting at the terminal, while a vehicle booked too late leaves cleared freight occupying warehouse space unnecessarily. Better status information allows road capacity to be aligned more closely with actual availability.

The same principle applies inside the terminal. Air-cargo warehouses are not designed to function as long-term storage facilities, and unnecessary dwell consumes floor space, handling capacity, and labour. Accelerating the release of completed imports therefore has a direct operational consequence even where the time saving on one consignment appears modest.

Frankfurt’s scale magnifies those gains. Lufthansa Cargo operates a global network spanning hundreds of destinations and handles substantial daily freight volumes through its principal hubs, with Frankfurt remaining at the centre of much of that activity.

The carrier has also been modernising the physical side of its Frankfurt operation, meaning digital changes to customs and information handling are being introduced alongside wider investment in cargo infrastructure.

Those developments address a recurring constraint in air logistics: an aircraft can cross continents in hours, while poor handovers on the ground can consume a disproportionate share of the total door-to-door journey. Faster flight schedules add little value if freight becomes trapped between warehouse, customs, and road transport processes after landing.

Digitisation cannot remove the need for accurate declarations, compliant goods, inspection, or customs intervention. Its value lies in ensuring that information already available to the supply chain reaches the required participant early enough to prevent avoidable waiting.

The FAIR@Link deployment will therefore be judged on less glamorous measures than software functionality — release times, exception rates, warehouse dwell, forwarder collection performance, and whether fewer shipments require duplicated handling steps.

If those measures improve, the technology will have achieved something more useful than another digital dashboard: it will have made the ground process move more like the air network it supports.
