Kuala Lumpur joins IAG pharmaceutical cold chain

IAG Cargo has expanded Kuala Lumpur pharmaceutical cold-chain network coverage. The GDP-certified station joins its Constant Climate network with daily Heathrow connectivity and specialist handling for temperature-sensitive healthcare shipments.

IAG Cargo has added Kuala Lumpur International Airport to its Constant Climate pharmaceutical network, extending its approved cold chain footprint in Asia-Pacific to 13 stations.

The GDP-certified Kuala Lumpur operation can handle active and passive temperature-controlled shipments and is connected with London Heathrow through daily services. From Heathrow, healthcare cargo can feed into IAG Cargo’s wider network of around 100 Constant Climate-approved stations.

The service covers products including vaccines, biotechnology materials, diagnostic samples, and other pharmaceutical shipments whose integrity depends on controlled handling. Active solutions use powered equipment to manage temperature, while passive systems depend on insulated packaging, refrigerants, dry ice, or phase-change materials to maintain the required range.

Neither approach removes the risk created by handovers. A pharmaceutical consignment can pass through collection vehicles, acceptance areas, storage facilities, aircraft ramps, transit warehouses, connecting flights, and final delivery before reaching its destination, so the weakest stage can determine whether the complete movement remains within specification.

Jordan Kohlbeck, head of pharmaceutical at IAG Cargo, said the Kuala Lumpur addition strengthens the carrier’s Southeast Asian capability, adding: “It expands our regional coverage and offers customers greater flexibility when moving temperature-sensitive goods across the globe.”

That flexibility becomes more valuable when shipments cannot simply wait for the next convenient departure. Many healthcare consignments combine high product value with restricted shelf life, clinical schedules, or strict stability requirements, making transport reliability more important than the absolute cost per kilogram.

Daily Heathrow connectivity gives Kuala Lumpur a predictable route into IAG Cargo’s main UK hub, where the carrier has expanded its temperature-controlled infrastructure. Its New Premia facility includes dedicated pharmaceutical handling areas covering several temperature regimes and is designed to increase capacity for higher-value specialist cargo.

Network density also provides an operational advantage during disruption. Weather, aircraft substitutions, missed connections, local handling problems, or sudden capacity shortages can force freight away from its planned itinerary, and an alternative routing is useful only when the replacement stations can maintain equivalent handling standards.

For pharmaceutical logistics, the network therefore has to behave consistently rather than merely appear extensive on a route map. Staff training, monitoring, packaging procedures, escalation processes, refrigeration capacity, documentation, and validated handovers all have to remain controlled when a shipment is transferred from one location to another.

That requirement is becoming more demanding as pharmaceutical supply chains handle a broader range of specialist products. Biologics, advanced therapies, personalised medicines, and diagnostic materials can move in relatively small consignments while carrying a value and clinical importance far beyond their weight.

The economics are correspondingly different from conventional general cargo. A failure affecting a high-value temperature-sensitive shipment can outweigh the saving achieved through a cheaper routing or longer connection, which is why carriers continue investing in qualified infrastructure even when pharmaceutical tonnage represents only a portion of overall airfreight volumes.

IAG Cargo has previously recorded growth in Constant Climate traffic, reinforcing the commercial case for adding approved stations. The company reported a 22% increase in Constant Climate tonnage during 2024 and further year-on-year growth during the first quarter of 2025, before the Kuala Lumpur addition.

The Malaysian station also sits within a wider cargo relationship involving IAG Cargo and regional partners. MASkargo uses IAG Cargo handling at Heathrow, while the carriers participate in broader commercial arrangements intended to increase network options across the partners’ respective operations.

Additional routing choice can reduce dependence on a single connection, although a larger network also increases the amount of coordination required to maintain consistent procedures. Temperature data, chain of custody, customs documentation, and booking information need to follow the physical shipment accurately when responsibility moves between carriers and handling agents.

Cold chain performance is consequently less about possessing a refrigerated room than controlling the interfaces around it. An airport may have appropriate storage, but a delayed transfer across the ramp or an unplanned wait during customs processing can still expose a shipment to conditions outside its intended handling profile.

Kuala Lumpur gives IAG Cargo another qualified point within that chain and strengthens its coverage of Southeast Asian pharmaceutical flows. The operational test is familiar across specialist logistics: the network has to remain controlled when everything runs to schedule, and remain controlled when it does not.
