dnata has expanded its Dubai cargo control operation into an integrated command centre combining flight, warehouse, truck, and community data across the emirate’s two principal airports.

The enhanced Cargo Integrated Command Centre at dnata is based at Dubai International Airport but provides a centralised operational view of activity at both DXB and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport. It develops an existing cargo control-centre model rather than introducing central supervision for the first time.

The scale of the operation explains the need for a broader view. During the 2025-26 financial year, dnata’s UAE cargo business handled more than one million tonnes of freight alongside approximately 189,000 flight movements and 46,000 truck movements.

Those numbers represent interconnected processes rather than separate traffic totals. An inbound aircraft affects unloading teams, warehouse capacity, customs and screening activity, collection appointments, truck movements, and available storage space, while an outbound flight depends on cargo arriving and being processed before its operational cut-off.

The command centre brings those flows onto an internally developed dashboard that refreshes every ten seconds. Data is drawn from several dnata platforms, allowing teams to monitor operational conditions across facilities and respond when a problem in one part of the chain begins to affect another.

One Cargo provides real-time information on handling activities and transactions. The Appointment and Dock Management system adds visibility of truck movements across DXB and DWC, while Calogi, dnata’s cargo community platform, contributes information covering landside activity and ancillary services, including last-mile delivery.

Combining the datasets reduces the risk of each operation being managed against a different picture. A warehouse may appear to have sufficient capacity until several inbound flights land close together, while truck congestion at the dock can prevent import freight leaving quickly enough to release the space required for the next aircraft.

The same problem applies in reverse for exports. A flight may have available capacity, but freight that has not arrived at the warehouse, completed screening, or cleared the required documentation cannot be loaded simply because the aircraft is ready. Visibility across all of those stages gives controllers more opportunity to intervene before the missed connection becomes unavoidable.

A ten-second refresh cycle does not remove the need for experienced operational decisions. It shortens the age of the information available to those making them, which is particularly useful in air cargo where a handful of widebody arrivals can alter workload and warehouse conditions over a comparatively short period.

dnata has introduced automation into more specific areas of the operation as well. Autonomous drones are being used for warehouse inventory activity, with the company reporting shipment-tracking accuracy above 99%. The technology reduces some manual stock checking while giving teams a more current view of where freight is physically located.

Security screening has also been centralised. A control room developed with Dubai Police allows six X-ray machines at DXB to be remotely operated and monitored from one location, extending the command-and-control approach into another process that can affect the speed at which cargo progresses through the facility.

Greater integration also increases dependence on the shared digital environment. If warehouse, truck, flight, and community information is feeding operational decisions through common systems, data quality, access control, system availability, and recovery procedures become part of physical cargo resilience.

A dashboard displaying incorrect truck appointments or incomplete cargo status can simply accelerate a poor decision. The value therefore depends on disciplined processes feeding the system, consistent identifiers across platforms, and staff being able to distinguish a genuine operating exception from stale or incomplete data.

The two-airport model adds another layer. DXB is a mature, high-intensity aviation hub, while DWC is being expanded to accommodate a larger proportion of Dubai’s future aviation activity. Cargo, labour, equipment, trucks, and customers can be affected by decisions at either location, making a common operational picture increasingly useful as the balance between the airports evolves.

That becomes particularly important when disruption forces resources to be reallocated. Moving a truck slot, specialist handling team, or shipment from one part of the network to another may relieve one bottleneck while creating a capacity problem elsewhere. Central control gives managers a better chance of seeing that trade-off before acting.

The command centre itself creates no additional warehouse floor space and puts no extra aircraft into service. Its purpose is to improve utilisation of assets already in the system and give teams earlier warning when demand, capacity, or timing moves out of balance.

That type of investment becomes more valuable as cargo volumes increase because operational complexity grows faster than the number of tonnes alone. More flights create more connections, more trucks create more dock interactions, and more digital services create more data that has to be reconciled with what is physically happening on the warehouse floor.

dnata’s Dubai operation has now put those feeds into one control environment. The test is decidedly practical: whether ten-second visibility results in fewer missed connections, shorter waits, and better use of warehouse and transport capacity rather than merely producing a very current picture of the same old bottleneck.
