Artico Cold Chain has secured ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certification across all seven of its cold storage facilities in the Philippines, bringing common quality and environmental management systems to a network that has expanded rapidly over the past three years.
The certifications cover facilities across six locations, with two sites in Biñan, Laguna, alongside operations in Santo Tomas, Batangas; Mabalacat, Pampanga; Urdaneta, Pangasinan; Santa Barbara, Iloilo; and Mandaue, Cebu. The network serves food and dairy producers, meat and seafood businesses, agricultural supply chains, pharmaceutical customers, and other companies requiring controlled storage conditions.
ISO 9001 covers quality management systems, including documented controls intended to maintain service standards, meet customer requirements, and support continuous improvement. ISO 14001 covers environmental management, including the processes organisations use to manage resource consumption, environmental impacts, and their approach to performance improvement.
For a cold storage operator, the two systems intersect in day-to-day operations. Refrigeration performance, maintenance, temperature monitoring, staff procedures, energy use, and incident management influence both service quality and environmental performance, particularly where several facilities are expected to deliver comparable conditions for the same customer.
Artico has said its environmental programme includes measures to improve energy and water efficiency, increase the use of renewable power, and strengthen refrigerant management. Those areas carry particular weight in temperature controlled logistics because cooling systems operate continuously and can account for a substantial share of a facility’s energy demand.
The certifications arrive as Artico’s physical footprint grows. The business entered cold storage in 2021 and has since combined existing facilities with newly constructed and acquired capacity across Luzon and the Visayas. Its network now provides around 31,500 pallet positions, giving the company considerably more operating complexity than a single-site cold store.
That geographical spread changes the value of standardised management systems. A local customer using one warehouse may judge performance largely through service at that building, but national food, pharmaceutical, and agricultural accounts can move inventory through several locations. They need loading procedures, maintenance discipline, temperature records, corrective actions, and escalation processes to remain dependable as stock moves between sites.
Philippine cold storage capacity is also expanding more broadly, with public and private investment adding modular and larger-scale facilities across agricultural regions. More pallet positions can ease capacity constraints, but additional buildings do little to improve the cold chain if operating standards become inconsistent as networks spread geographically.
The technical challenge is greater than in ambient warehousing. Temperature controlled buildings carry higher energy demand, more complex refrigeration equipment, stricter maintenance requirements, and less tolerance for interruption. A compressor failure, refrigerant leak, power problem, or poorly managed door cycle can become an inventory issue quickly when products have narrow storage tolerances.
Environmental management therefore has a direct operational dimension. Improving energy efficiency can lower cost as well as emissions, while tighter refrigerant controls reduce both environmental impact and the likelihood of equipment performance deteriorating unnoticed. Renewable power can also reduce exposure to electricity costs, although it does not remove the requirement for resilient supply and backup arrangements.
Two Artico sites, Biñan 1 and Santo Tomas, have already obtained EDGE Advanced certification for resource efficiency. Santo Tomas provides 5,000 pallet positions across 16 cold rooms operating from chilled conditions down to minus 25 degrees Celsius, illustrating the range of technical environments that have to sit under the wider management framework.
The commercial pressure to maintain consistency will increase as utilisation rises. AyalaLand Logistics reported cold storage revenue of PHP118 million in the first quarter of 2026, up 157% year on year, reflecting both expansion and stronger use of the estate. Higher throughput increases the importance of maintenance, record keeping, training, and process control because small weaknesses are repeated across more movements.
ISO certification is not a guarantee that every pallet will remain within specification. The standards define management systems rather than individual shipment outcomes, and performance still depends on how rigorously procedures are followed on the warehouse floor. Power resilience, maintenance execution, monitoring equipment, loading practices, and staff response remain decisive.
The practical value comes from having a common structure against which those activities can be audited and improved. For customers using several Artico facilities, that should make it easier to assess whether an expanding network is operating as one cold chain rather than a collection of sites with different practices.
Further growth will test that consistency. As new facilities join the network and recently added sites increase utilisation, the quality and environmental systems will have to scale at the same pace as physical capacity. In cold storage, adding pallet positions is relatively easy to measure; keeping operating discipline uniform across them is the more demanding part.
