WD-40 Company is working with suppliers and third-party manufacturers to manage increases of between 40% and 100% across some specialty chemicals and base oils used within its maintenance-product portfolio.
Petroleum-linked chemical markets and transport routes have been disrupted by renewed conflict in the Middle East, creating sharp increases over a period of approximately three months. The company is assessing alternative sources and logistics arrangements while reviewing the effect on production cost, inventory, margin, and customer pricing.
The pressure follows a strong third financial quarter, during which WD-40 reported net sales of US$195.1m, 24% above the previous year, and operating income of US$40.3m, representing growth of 47%.
Those results do not yet contain the full effect of the higher input prices because raw materials move through purchasing, blending, manufacturing, finished-goods inventory, and distribution before reaching reported cost of products sold. WD-40 has indicated that cost changes can take approximately 90 to 120 days to pass through that cycle.
The lag can protect reported margins temporarily, but it also leaves procurement teams making decisions before the final financial impact is visible. Material bought at today’s elevated price may remain in inventory until a later quarter, when market conditions and customer demand have already moved again.
WD-40’s products depend on base oils, specialty additives, solvents, propellants, packaging, and contract manufacturing. A shortage or quality problem affecting one component can restrict finished production even when most of the bill of materials remains available.
Alternative suppliers must meet formulation, performance, safety, regulatory, packaging, and transport requirements. A chemical offered under a similar commercial description may behave differently during blending, filling, storage, or final use, making rapid substitution difficult.
Qualification may involve laboratory work, production trials, audits, documentation, and approvals across several national markets. Introducing material without adequate testing could exchange a sourcing problem for product quality, compliance, or recall exposure.
Third-party manufacturers offer geographic and capacity flexibility, although they must have compatible equipment, trained employees, approved materials, packaging, and available production slots. Capacity that appears available commercially may not be suitable for aerosol or regulated chemical production.
Procurement choices move cost through the chain
Buyers can absorb volatility, increase inventory, negotiate indexed terms, switch suppliers, or seek customer price increases, but none of those responses is neutral. Each changes working capital, warehouse demand, service risk, or commercial competitiveness.
Larger safety stocks protect production against short interruptions while tying up cash and consuming storage built around hazardous-material limits, segregation rules, fire controls, and shelf-life. Chemical inventories cannot always be expanded simply because more floor space is available.
Heavy purchasing during a price spike may preserve continuity but lock inflated costs into stock after the market eases. Conservative buying reduces that exposure while increasing the risk that suppliers allocate limited volume to customers offering firmer commitments.
Customer pricing follows a separate timetable. Distributors may bring orders forward ahead of an announced increase, producing a temporary sales surge followed by weaker demand while the channel works through accumulated inventory.
That behaviour can obscure underlying consumption and make production forecasts less reliable. A factory responding to apparent growth may build stock into the period when customer orders fall back.
WD-40’s international footprint means the cost effect will differ across the Americas, Europe, India, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. Local sourcing, currency movements, freight routes, product mix, manufacturing arrangements, and customer contracts influence how quickly inflation reaches each market.
The same energy shock can affect raw materials, aerosol packaging, road fuel, ocean freight, and manufacturing utilities simultaneously. Procurement cannot isolate the quoted chemical price from the full delivered cost when several stages of the chain are moving in the same direction.
Strong sales growth provides greater volume but also increases the amount of constrained material required. Forecast accuracy becomes more valuable when suppliers need commitments and contract plants must reserve scarce production time.
Resilience increasingly carries an explicit cost, with business leaders assigning budgets to alternative suppliers, inventory, and network redundancy. The appropriate level varies by input: a widely available packaging item may justify straightforward dual sourcing, while a specialist chemical may require a long technical relationship with only a small number of qualified producers.
Supplier financial health also becomes more important during rapid inflation because smaller producers and contract manufacturers may need revised payment terms or purchase commitments to secure their own feedstocks. A technically approved source offers little protection if it cannot finance production.
Transport alternatives require equal scrutiny, particularly where chemicals move under dangerous-goods rules. A new source may quote a lower factory-gate price while relying on longer routes, scarce specialist carriers, or storage locations unable to accept the product.
The next several quarters will show how much of the increase can be offset through sourcing, pricing, productivity, and product mix. The 90–120-day lag means the current earnings strength and future input pressure are travelling through the accounts on different schedules.
Continuity remains the immediate requirement because an unavailable compliant ingredient can stop production more quickly than margin deterioration appears in reported figures. Securing approved material, protecting manufacturing slots, and avoiding rushed substitutions will determine whether WD-40 can convert its current sales growth into finished product while the chemical market remains unsettled.
