Tive says its shipment-tracking technology helped Venture Metals+ prevent more than $1 million in cargo-theft losses during the first half of 2026, including the recovery of a recycled-copper load valued at $250,000.

Venture Metals+, a recycling, reclamation, and investment-recovery business, uses the system to monitor high-priority loads, sensitive routes, and shipments with strict customer deadlines. The deployment combines connected trackers, a cloud platform, live location data, geofencing, light detection, and route-deviation alerts.

The most detailed incident occurred on 23 March, when two employees received an unscheduled light alert from a tracker attached to the copper shipment. Fernando Boom, director of transportation at Venture Metals+, checked the platform at approximately 18:00 and found that the truck was moving away from its intended route.

The driver reportedly claimed that the tracker was malfunctioning and that the vehicle remained in the correct location. Smart Route Deviation Alerts showed otherwise.

Boom and colleagues continued to monitor the movement, contacted local police, and recovered the shipment after the vehicle stopped at a truck stop in Wichita Falls, Texas. The full load was returned without the company reporting a material loss.

Boom said real-time visibility allowed his team to respond to a developing threat rather than investigate only after the cargo disappeared. Venture Metals+ now treats tracking as part of a layered security process rather than a replacement for carrier checks, seals, law-enforcement contact, or internal escalation.

The deployment began with a 30-day pilot using Tive Solo 5G non-lithium trackers. Venture Metals+ says the devices required little training and were subsequently used across higher-risk loads and routes.

Its logistics network handles thousands of weekly shipments through company assets and third-party partners, creating a monitoring task that cannot depend entirely on telephone updates from drivers or periodic status messages from carriers.

Connected visibility changes the timing of an intervention. Conventional track-and-trace may confirm where a shipment was last scanned, while a live tracker can reveal movement, dwell, route changes, and access to the load while an event is still developing.

That distinction is particularly important for metals, electronics, pharmaceuticals, food, and other goods that can be moved, divided, or resold quickly. Once cargo enters an unauthorised facility or disappears from the contracted route, recovery becomes substantially more difficult.

The $1 million figure is a customer and technology-provider estimate of losses prevented rather than an audited recovery total. It should still attract attention because the claim is tied to identifiable interventions, including the $250,000 copper recovery, rather than a theoretical calculation based solely on shipment value.

Cargo theft remains a material cost across North American supply chains. Verisk CargoNet recorded 767 supply-chain crime events in the United States and Canada during the first quarter of 2026.

Incident volume fell 5.3% year on year, but estimated losses remained at $131.58 million and confirmed cargo-theft reports increased to 596. Lower incident numbers therefore did not produce a comparable reduction in financial exposure.

The threat is also becoming more organised and digitally prepared. CargoNet has reported greater use of stolen credentials and carrier impersonation, allowing criminals to appear legitimate during booking, tender, and collection.

That pattern has shifted security controls towards identity verification throughout the shipment lifecycle, rather than relying only on checks at the warehouse gate or when a carrier first enters the supplier database.

A tracker cannot establish whether a driver, carrier, or broker was legitimate when the load was awarded. It can provide a second line of evidence once the freight begins moving.

A route deviation, unexpected light event, prolonged dwell, or loss of communication can trigger investigation before the shipment reaches a destination selected by the thief. That intervention is useful only when someone is monitoring the alerts and authorised to act.

Alert design is therefore critical. Operations teams can become desensitised when every minor deviation produces a notification, particularly on lanes affected by traffic, parking restrictions, road closures, weather, or lawful dispatch changes.

Effective use requires thresholds that reflect the route, cargo value, approved stopping points, and expected transit pattern. A short deviation that is insignificant for one load may justify immediate escalation for another.

Response procedures matter as much as detection. Employees need to know who verifies the alert, who contacts the driver or broker, when senior management becomes involved, and when law enforcement should be called.

The March recovery succeeded because data was interpreted quickly and converted into coordinated action. A tracker that records an incident without triggering an effective response merely produces a more detailed account of the loss.

Device placement and tamper awareness create another practical consideration. A visible tracker may deter interference but can also be removed, while a concealed unit may continue producing useful intelligence after the trailer or packaging is opened.

Light sensors, seals, and independent devices can be combined so that one compromised control does not leave the shipment unmonitored. High-value loads may justify more than one device or different tracking technologies on the tractor, trailer, and cargo.

Venture Metals+ also reports fewer service failures, improved on-time performance, reduced manual tracking, and stronger customer communication since deployment. The company has not published before-and-after performance data or the cost of equipping its priority shipments.

The case shows why shipment visibility is moving from passive reporting towards active risk control. The value does not come from another dot on a map; it comes from identifying which movement is suspicious, placing the alert in front of someone authorised to respond, and doing so before the cargo disappears into the network.
