DP World launches European automotive rail corridor

DP World has launched a new European automotive rail corridor. Finished vehicles now move from Zeebrugge to Aiud before continuing by road into southeastern markets.

DP World has completed its first end-to-end European rail movement of finished vehicles, carrying cars from Zeebrugge in Belgium to its Aiud terminal in Romania before onward delivery by road to Chisinau in Moldova. The pilot establishes a new intermodal corridor between western and southeastern Europe.

DP World plans to introduce a regular service with twice-monthly operations during the second half of 2026 and use Aiud as a distribution hub for finished vehicles serving Romania and neighbouring markets. The company also intends to develop similar connections from Aiud to other European ports, including Koper in Slovenia.

The route replaces the longest section of an equivalent road journey with rail. DP World estimates that the model can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 55% compared with long-haul trucking while reducing exposure to road-user charges and some of the administrative complexity associated with cross-border vehicle movements.

Finished-vehicle logistics gives the corridor a different operating profile from conventional container rail. Cars cannot be stacked into standard boxes and require dedicated wagons, controlled loading and unloading, secure compounds, and enough vehicle volume to justify moving a complete train.

The economics therefore depend heavily on consolidation. A rail service can move a large batch of vehicles efficiently over a long distance, but only if enough units are available at the origin without leaving finished inventory waiting excessively for the next departure.

Twice-monthly operation is a relatively cautious starting point. The frequency gives DP World time to establish regular automotive volumes before increasing train departures, avoiding the cost of running underutilised services while the corridor is still being developed.

Zeebrugge provides a natural western gateway because of its established role in finished-vehicle handling and its deep connections with automotive shipping. Aiud provides the inland counterpart, allowing vehicles to leave the long-distance rail service closer to markets in Romania, Moldova, and neighbouring southeastern European countries.

The onward road movement to Chisinau illustrates the intended model. Rail handles the consolidated trunk journey, while road transport provides the more flexible final leg where destination volumes become smaller and more dispersed.

That division can reduce the dependence on car transporters running the complete distance across Europe. Long-haul road movements are exposed to driver availability, tolls, national regulations, border administration, and changes in road-user charging, while the economics of returning specialised vehicle transporters can also be difficult where cargo flows are uneven.

Rail has its own constraints. Paths must be available through several national infrastructure networks, suitable wagons have to be positioned, and delays can occur at terminals or international handover points. A dedicated vehicle train cannot simply be replaced with generic container capacity when disruption occurs.

Reliability therefore depends on integrating the modes rather than assuming rail is inherently predictable. Vehicles must arrive at Zeebrugge in time for loading, the train must reach Aiud to plan, and road capacity must be available to clear the terminal quickly enough for the next batch.

Aiud gives DP World physical infrastructure around which to organise those movements. The multimodal terminal opened in 2024 following a €21 million investment and covers 180,000m² beside Romania’s A10 motorway with access to the national rail network.

The facility provides container handling, storage, customs, and freight-forwarding capabilities, allowing it to function as more than a railhead. For automotive customers, the important role is the ability to become a regional switching point where longer-distance rail flows are broken down into individual country or customer deliveries.

That hub structure can become more valuable as vehicle flows change. European automotive logistics has to accommodate domestic production, imports through different seaports, electric-vehicle growth, variable dealer inventories, and changing manufacturing locations. A fixed corridor needs enough flexibility at each end to serve those movements without becoming dependent on one customer or one destination.

DP World’s proposed Koper connection would begin creating that network effect. If Aiud receives finished vehicles from more than one European gateway, the terminal can potentially balance different production and import flows while increasing the amount of cargo available for regional distribution.

The environmental benefit will depend partly on utilisation. Rail generally provides lower emissions over long distances, but the overall saving varies with train loading, traction, terminal handling, and the road mileage required before and after the rail leg. DP World’s figure of up to 55% should therefore be read as the company’s estimate for the model rather than a universal saving for every shipment.

The commercial argument may ultimately prove as important as emissions. Automotive manufacturers need transport costs that can be forecast reliably, particularly when high volumes of finished vehicles are moving between production centres, ports, and sales markets. Reducing exposure to long-distance road charges gives another option when comparing logistics routes.

The first Zeebrugge-Aiud movement means the corridor is now operational rather than proposed. The next test comes in the second half of 2026, when twice-monthly departures are expected to establish whether enough vehicle volume and schedule reliability exist to support a regular service.

If those movements become routine, Aiud’s role changes from the destination of one pilot train to a regional automotive logistics hub. Further port connections would then make the corridor less about one Belgium-Romania route and more about a rail-based distribution network linking western European gateways with southeastern markets.
