Ports America signs 10-year Trailer Bridge partnership

Ports America begins a decade-long partnership supporting Trailer Bridge operations. The agreement combines Jacksonville stevedoring with implementation of the Dockworks terminal platform, which is due to begin immediately before customer-facing functionality rolls out during 2027.

Ports America has entered a 10-year partnership with Trailer Bridge covering stevedoring and terminal technology at the carrier’s Jacksonville operation supporting its Jones Act service to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The agreement took effect on 31 August and includes two additional five-year extension options. Ports America will provide stevedoring services in Jacksonville and implement its Dockworks terminal operating platform across Trailer Bridge’s operation.

Dockworks implementation begins immediately, with customer-facing functionality expected to roll out during 2027. Trailer Bridge says the platform is intended to provide customers with greater visibility across their supply chains while supporting the company’s broader terminal operation.

The arrangement ties physical cargo handling and terminal information into one long-term operating contract. Stevedoring determines how efficiently freight moves between vessel and shore, while the terminal system records and coordinates the events surrounding that movement.

Trailer Bridge operates regular Jacksonville–San Juan sailings using both roll-on/roll-off and lift-on/lift-off equipment. Its published schedule shows recurring departures in both directions, creating fixed cargo cut-offs around which customers, hauliers, terminals, and vessel operations have to work.

That regularity makes terminal execution particularly important. A cargo unit missing its planned sailing may have to wait for a later departure rather than simply moving a few hours behind schedule, affecting inventory availability and customer delivery dates in Puerto Rico or on the mainland.

Ports America brings a specialist stevedoring and terminal-operating business into that process. Its role puts labour planning, vessel working, cargo handling, and quay execution alongside Trailer Bridge’s existing ocean, equipment, and customer-service operation.

No financial value has been disclosed for the ten-year agreement, and neither company has published quantified productivity targets for the stevedoring arrangement or Dockworks implementation. Faster turnaround, lower dwell, and improved labour utilisation therefore remain operating objectives rather than measured outcomes.

The immediate technology task is integration. A terminal operating platform only improves visibility when cargo events are captured accurately and passed into the systems used by operations teams and customers.

Receipt at the gate, location in the terminal, loading, discharge, availability, and exceptions all need to relate to the correct cargo unit. Inaccurate or delayed status information can create a different form of friction, with customers making transport decisions against data that no longer matches the physical freight.

Customer rollout in 2027 gives Ports America and Trailer Bridge time to establish the underlying operation before exposing more of the information externally. That sequence is sensible: reliable cargo status depends first on reliable event capture inside the terminal.

Trailer Bridge has already been adding visibility elsewhere in its network. Its broader asset strategy has included real-time tracking equipment and investment in the vessels and port infrastructure supporting Puerto Rico operations.

In 2026, the company has invested approximately $9 million in scheduled dry-dock work across its roll-on/roll-off vessels. The Ports America agreement adds shore-side operations and technology to that programme rather than changing the underlying Jacksonville–San Juan route.

The lane is commercially important because ocean freight carries a large share of the goods moving between Puerto Rico and the US mainland. Trailer Bridge states that more than 85% of ocean-transported goods between the island and mainland move through Jacksonville.

That concentration increases the consequence of delays at the gateway. Puerto Rico supply chains have fewer practical alternatives when a sailing, vessel, berth, or terminal operation is disrupted than shippers moving between mainland markets connected by several road and rail corridors.

The cargo mix also places different demands on the terminal. Roll-on/roll-off equipment, containers, trailers, vehicles, and other freight do not necessarily follow identical handling and storage processes, requiring the operating system to reflect how each unit actually moves through the facility.

The digital element follows a wider move by ports and terminal operators to combine operational systems with customer information. Latvia’s three main ports recently completed a common digital platform linking vessel, berth, permit, access, payment, mapping, and logistics data, illustrating how fragmented port processes are increasingly being consolidated around shared records.

Dockworks is narrower in scope and sits within one commercial operation, but the underlying problem is similar. Cargo handling generates information across vessel planning, gate activity, yard operations, equipment, customers, and transport providers, and each additional manual hand-off creates another opportunity for delay or discrepancy.

Ports America’s physical role also means the technology provider and stevedoring operator are the same commercial partner. That should reduce one common implementation problem in which a software supplier can identify poor operating data but has limited influence over the process generating it.

The arrangement still has to work with Trailer Bridge’s booking, customer, vessel, tracking, and equipment systems. Trucking partners and San Juan operations will generate further information outside the Jacksonville terminal, so Dockworks will not by itself create an end-to-end data environment.

The ten-year term provides enough time to develop those connections beyond the first software deployment. It also makes the relationship more consequential than a short technology trial: Ports America is becoming part of the operating structure behind a core Trailer Bridge trade lane.

The first measure will be implementation rather than ambition. Stable stevedoring, accurate terminal events, and a functioning Dockworks deployment have to come before customers see better visibility in 2027. Once that happens, vessel productivity, cargo dwell, status accuracy, and exception handling will show whether the partnership has improved the route or merely added another system around it.
