Prasco has acquired a pharmaceutical distribution facility exceeding 130,000 square feet in Carey, Ohio, adding automation, cold-chain capability, secure storage, and a second operating location alongside its existing Mason campus.
The facility includes a controlled-substances vault and cage, temperature-controlled handling infrastructure, automation, and inventory-management capability. Prasco says the additional site is intended to improve operational redundancy and business continuity across the two Ohio campuses.
The company has not disclosed the acquisition price, seller, precise automation architecture, or the proportion of the building dedicated to temperature-controlled products. It has also not published a timetable for moving inventory or customer programmes into the Carey site.
Those omissions limit how precisely the capacity increase can be measured, but the functional expansion is clear. The new building adds specialist pharmaceutical distribution infrastructure rather than conventional overflow warehouse space.
Carey sits within Ohio’s wider pharmaceutical and logistics corridor and provides access to major interstate highways. Prasco also points to the site’s proximity to customers, contract development and manufacturing organisations, national distribution centres, and health systems.
That location can shorten some transport links, although Prasco has not published route-mile or delivery-time savings. The more immediate value comes from having another qualified site from which inventory and specialist handling activity can be managed.
Pharmaceutical distribution carries additional controls compared with general warehousing. Products may require defined storage temperatures, lot and expiry management, secure access, documented handling procedures, quarantine status, and traceability through each stage of the warehouse process.
Controlled substances add a further physical security requirement. Vault and cage capacity cannot be created quickly when another site becomes constrained, making an existing secure facility materially different from a standard warehouse that happens to have spare floor space.
Cold-chain products introduce their own operating limits. Receiving, storage, order preparation, and dispatch have to maintain specified temperature conditions, while excursions can trigger investigations before product is released for onward distribution.
Prasco’s current commercialisation operation already includes storage of finished goods, components, and active pharmaceutical ingredients within secure cGMP environments. Its services also include 3PL distribution and logistics for pharmaceutical partners, placing the Carey acquisition within an existing specialist operation rather than a new move into contract distribution.
The company states that its wider facilities provide more than 200,000 square feet of warehouse space with cold-chain and vault capability. That figure gives an indication of existing scale but does not provide a clean pre-acquisition baseline from which to calculate the precise percentage increase represented by Carey.
Prasco products are available through more than 70,000 locations nationwide, giving the distribution network a broad downstream footprint. The second campus creates another point from which inventory can support those channels and the partner programmes managed through Prasco’s commercialisation business.
Redundancy is more complicated than simply owning two warehouses. Product has to be located in the right place, systems need a consistent view of inventory, and the second facility must be able to assume relevant activity when another site is unavailable or constrained.
That requires common procedures for lot control, security, temperature monitoring, order release, quality management, and customer allocation. A second campus can otherwise create additional stock duplication and transfers without delivering the intended resilience.
Automation adds another layer. Prasco has confirmed that Carey contains automated capability but has not identified the equipment or software involved, so the likely productivity gains cannot yet be quantified.
In pharmaceutical logistics, automation also operates within stricter inventory controls than many high-volume fulfilment systems. A faster pick provides little benefit when the wrong lot, expiry date, storage condition, or regulatory status is attached to the product.
The relevant measures therefore extend beyond cases or pallets handled per hour. Inventory accuracy, traceability, exception rates, order-cycle time, temperature compliance, and the ability to move work between campuses will provide a better indication of whether Carey improves the network.
The new site enters a logistics sector where specialist healthcare capacity continues to attract investment. GEODIS recently added a dedicated pharmaceutical warehouse near Manchester Airport, while other cold-chain providers are expanding temperature-controlled and reusable packaging operations around major life-sciences clusters.
The details vary between markets, but the investment logic is consistent. Pharmaceutical shippers require infrastructure that combines storage with regulatory controls, security, visibility, and reliable transport connections; suitable buildings cannot always be substituted quickly when demand or disruption shifts.
Carey gives Prasco additional capacity within the same state as its existing operation, which simplifies some aspects of network management compared with adding a distant national campus. Staff, quality teams, transport providers, and inventory can potentially be coordinated across the two sites without introducing another regional distribution layer.
The company also highlights the trained employee base associated with the location. Existing pharmaceutical handling experience can shorten the operational ramp-up compared with recruiting and training an entirely new warehouse workforce, although Prasco has not disclosed staffing numbers.
The acquisition will still require systems integration and operating alignment before the building functions as a genuine second node. Product qualification, inventory placement, standard procedures, customer allocation, and the division of work between Carey and Mason all need to be established.
That integration will determine whether the site improves continuity or simply adds capacity. If inventory and specialist functions can move between campuses without losing visibility or control, the second location reduces dependence on a single operating point.
