Balloon One formalises Slimstock forecasting partnership

Balloon One has now formalised its forecasting partnership with Slimstock. Customers can connect Slim4 planning capabilities with existing ERP and warehouse systems rather than replacing their current execution platforms.

IN Brief:

  • Balloon One and Slimstock have formalised a partnership after working together through industry activity for more than two years.
  • Customers can connect Slimstock’s Slim4 demand forecasting and inventory planning capabilities with ERP and warehouse systems supplied by Balloon One.
  • The partnership separates planning from execution, allowing businesses to add specialist forecasting without replacing systems already controlling orders, stock and warehouse activity.

Balloon One has formalised its partnership with supply chain planning specialist Slimstock after more than two years of joint industry activity, giving customers a defined route to add demand forecasting and inventory planning to the systems already controlling orders, stock and warehouse operations.

The relationship connects two layers of supply chain software that use much of the same data but make different decisions. ERP and warehouse management platforms record transactions and direct operational activity, while planning software looks forward, using demand, inventory and supply information to estimate what stock the business is likely to require before those orders reach the warehouse.

An ERP system can already hold purchasing, sales, finance and inventory records, while a WMS contains more detailed information about where stock is located and how it moves inside the facility. Accurate execution within those systems still leaves room for poor purchasing decisions if demand is forecast badly, which is the gap Slimstock’s Slim4 platform is intended to address.

Slim4 uses demand and inventory data to support forecasting, replenishment and stock planning, helping businesses identify potential shortages or excess inventory before either condition becomes an immediate operational problem. The distinction becomes more visible during seasonal peaks because a warehouse can process orders accurately and quickly while still holding the wrong mix of products if the purchasing plan was based on a weak forecast.

Too much stock ties up working capital and consumes storage positions, while too little can generate missed sales, emergency replenishment and premium freight. Forecasting therefore sits between those risks, determining how much inventory should enter the network before warehouse execution systems decide where that stock is stored and how it is picked.

The Balloon One partnership allows customers to add that planning layer without replacing ERP or WMS platforms that are already working effectively. Operational data can feed Slim4 while established systems continue running orders, inventory transactions and warehouse processes, reducing the scale of technology change when the problem sits mainly in forecasting rather than execution.

Integration quality will determine how well that architecture performs because planning depends on reliable item histories, lead times, stock balances and open orders. Incorrect supplier lead times can make inventory appear safer than it is, duplicate product records can split demand history and inaccurate warehouse balances can trigger recommendations to buy stock the business already holds.

Clean master data is only one part of the requirement because the information also has to arrive at the planning system at the right frequency. A forecast built on yesterday’s inventory position can become misleading when fast moving products are selling rapidly or a large inbound delivery has just been received, so integration design has to reflect how quickly the underlying operation changes.

Recommendations then need to move back into normal business processes. A forecast can identify a likely shortage, but purchasing, production or replenishment teams still have to act through the systems used to run the company, which makes the connection between planning and execution as important as the forecast itself.

Balloon One already provides ERP, warehouse management, transport management and automation systems, giving the company access to several of the operational platforms from which planning data can originate. Slimstock’s partner network now includes Balloon One among its global technology partners, placing the relationship within a wider integration ecosystem rather than positioning Slim4 as a replacement for those existing platforms.

Seasonal and fast changing product categories can make the planning layer more valuable because errors have less time to correct themselves. Food businesses have shelf life and batch constraints, while ecommerce operations can face rapid shifts in assortment and promotional demand, increasing the cost of discovering an inventory problem only when an order reaches the warehouse.

Forecasting can also influence warehouse capacity before a seasonal peak begins. If purchasing plans generate more inventory than expected, storage locations fill earlier and picking routes can become congested, while under purchasing leaves labour and automation capacity available but insufficient stock to fulfil demand. Planning decisions therefore affect physical warehouse performance as well as the balance sheet.

The same data can support exception based working by directing planners towards products where demand, supply or inventory has moved outside expected ranges. That allows people to spend more time investigating material changes rather than reviewing every item manually, provided the rules generating those exceptions are based on accurate data and appropriate service targets.

Customers adopting the combined approach will still need clear ownership of product codes, supplier records, lead times and inventory balances across the connected systems. When several platforms are allowed to maintain conflicting versions of the same field, planning output can deteriorate even if the forecasting model itself is performing correctly.

The formal partnership consequently gives Balloon One customers another way to strengthen planning without redesigning the entire technology stack. Its practical value will depend on the accuracy and timeliness of the data feeding Slim4 and the speed with which recommendations can be converted into purchasing and replenishment decisions, allowing specialist forecasting to improve the operation without turning integration into another source of delay.
