Orca Scan has released a Model Context Protocol server that allows warehouse and operations teams to create barcode based tracking systems through conversational instructions.

The integration connects Orca Scan with AI assistants including ChatGPT and Claude. Users can describe the products, assets, events, and information that need to be recorded, allowing the assistant to generate the fields, database structure, and labels required for the workflow.

A receiving process could be configured to capture a product code, batch number, quantity, condition, storage location, and operator identity each time a pallet enters the warehouse. Additional requirements, such as photographs of damaged goods or mandatory expiry dates, can be added through further instructions.

The approach can support stock control, asset registers, inspections, maintenance records, proof of delivery, tool management, quarantine processes, and the movement of goods between warehouse zones. Mobile devices or dedicated scanners then capture information against the generated barcode structure.

Conversational configuration reduces the technical work involved in creating a basic scanning system, particularly where an operation has previously relied on spreadsheets, paper forms, or disconnected local databases. It may also shorten the setup required for temporary projects, product recalls, audits, or customer specific workflows.

Changes can be introduced without rebuilding the application from the beginning. A supervisor might add a temperature field, introduce a second approval, make a photograph compulsory, or create a new exception status as the operating process develops.

Rapid configuration does not remove the need to define the process carefully. An AI assistant can construct fields and relationships, but it cannot decide whether the proposed workflow reflects the company’s master data, regulatory responsibilities, inventory rules, or integration requirements unless those constraints are provided.

Poorly defined instructions could create duplicated identifiers, inconsistent naming, unnecessary scanning, or records that cannot be reconciled with a warehouse management or enterprise resource planning system. Testing remains necessary before generated workflows are used for stock valuation, traceability, customer fulfilment, or compliance records.

Operational software becomes easier to assemble

Supply chain AI has generally entered warehouses through demand forecasting, optimisation, document processing, vision systems, and exception detection. Conversational configuration moves it into application creation, allowing an operational requirement to become a working data capture process without a conventional development cycle.

That shift can give warehouse teams greater independence, although it changes rather than removes the role of IT. Technology departments still need to establish permissions, data ownership, retention periods, naming standards, integration rules, and an approval process for systems that affect core records.

Several teams could otherwise create overlapping applications for the same products or assets, each using different identifiers and definitions. The immediate benefit of fast local configuration may then produce a longer consolidation problem when information must be combined for reporting or transferred into a central platform.

Damaged items, unreadable labels, mixed pallets, partial quantities, substitutions, and returns need defined routes so that an operative is not forced to choose an inaccurate status simply to complete the scan.

Security also becomes more important when an AI assistant can create or alter operational structures. Permissions should restrict who can change fields, labels, validation rules, and integrations, while an audit record should show when a configuration was modified and by whom.
