Terminal has raised $20 million in Series A funding to expand a platform that connects commercial vehicle data from hundreds of telematics providers through one application programming interface.
Battery Ventures led the round, with strategic investment from Intact Private Capital and Penske. Existing investors Y Combinator and Wayfinder Ventures also participated, taking Terminal’s total funding to approximately $26 million since its establishment in 2023.
The platform connects location, speed, diagnostics, driver activity, camera events, vehicle details, and other records generated by factory systems and aftermarket telematics equipment. Customers can use one integration rather than developing a separate connection for every provider encountered across the fleets they serve.
Terminal supplies data infrastructure to logistics software companies, insurers, fuel card providers, fleet management platforms, maintenance systems, and financial services businesses. Each application requires vehicle information, although the format, update frequency, authentication, and field definitions differ between providers.
Commercial fleets frequently combine several generations of hardware and software. Factory connected vehicles may operate beside aftermarket tracking devices, cameras, electronic logging equipment, refrigerated trailer sensors, tyre systems, and specialist safety platforms.
Adding each provider individually creates a continuing maintenance burden. Interfaces change, fields are renamed, permissions expire, and security requirements evolve, requiring engineering teams to revisit integrations that were previously considered complete.
A standard interface can absorb part of that work, but connectivity alone does not make the records interchangeable. Providers may define ignition, mileage, harsh braking, vehicle status, or location accuracy differently, requiring transparent rules for normalisation and exception handling.
Source information must remain visible because a diagnostic code from the vehicle manufacturer may carry different precision from an aftermarket device. Simplifying access should not conceal distinctions that influence maintenance, insurance, or dispatch decisions.
Native connectivity is expanding as more manufacturers expose vehicle data directly. Geotab’s Hyundai integration allows fleet information to enter a management platform without installing another tracking unit, reducing hardware while adding another data source that software providers must support.
Logistics applications use live location, driver hours, trailer status, and trip history to support dispatch, routing, estimated arrival times, and customer visibility. Historical data can also identify recurring delay, excess mileage, asset underuse, and route patterns that increase fuel consumption.
Maintenance systems can combine fault codes, mileage, engine hours, and operating conditions to schedule work against actual use rather than a fixed calendar. Insurers apply similar records to underwriting, safety programmes, claims, and risk assessment.
Those applications make data governance a core operating issue. Fleet information can reveal customer locations, delivery routes, employee behaviour, vehicle use, and commercially sensitive activity, requiring clear rules around ownership, consent, access, retention, and onward sharing.
A vehicle may also change operator, telematics provider, lease status, or insurance arrangement during its life. Permissions must follow those changes without leaving historical access in place for organisations that no longer have a legitimate reason to receive the data.
Security becomes more important as the integration layer expands. A platform connected to hundreds of systems represents a valuable point of access, making encryption, authentication, monitoring, audit records, and incident response fundamental to the product.
Latency varies between providers and use cases. Historical utilisation analysis can tolerate delayed records, while collision alerts, cargo theft, driver hour checks, and live dispatch require much faster updates. Customers need to know whether a connected field is suitable for an immediate operating decision.
The funding will support additional integrations, product development, and commercial expansion. Penske brings experience across fleet leasing, maintenance, and logistics, while Intact connects the platform with insurance applications.
As connected assets multiply, the difficulty is shifting from generating vehicle data to making it consistently usable. Terminal is placing itself between the growing number of hardware sources and the software expected to convert those records into routing, maintenance, safety, and financial decisions.
