Maersk has increased its deployed container capacity in the intra North Europe market from approximately 39,800 TEU to 50,800 TEU during the past year.
The 11,000 TEU increase lifted its estimated market share from 13.5% to 16.2%, giving Maersk the largest capacity gain among the ten biggest operators in the regional trade.
Two feeder strings between Germany and Poland account for a substantial part of the expansion. Four vessels ranging from around 2,100 to 4,800 TEU provide combined capacity of 14,300 TEU across the services.
One of the vessels is the 2,100 TEU methanol capable Laura Maersk, connecting the feeder programme with the carrier’s wider introduction of ships designed to operate on lower emission fuels.
Total capacity across the intra North Europe market increased by approximately 20,000 TEU, or 6.8%, during the same period. The regional fleet now contains 243 vessels with average capacity of 1,294 TEU, compared with 235 ships averaging 1,253 TEU a year earlier.
Maersk has consequently grown at a considerably faster rate than the market. MSC remains the largest operator, although its estimated share slipped slightly from 21.3% to 21.2% despite adding around 4,000 TEU.
The regional ranking has also changed following CLdN’s acquisition of Samskip’s container services between the UK and continental Europe. CLdN’s operated capacity rose from approximately 2,750 TEU to 6,300 TEU, while Samskip’s position contracted.
Slot charter arrangements further complicate the competitive picture because carriers can sell space on services without operating every vessel directly. Published fleet capacity therefore shows physical deployment but does not capture every commercial route or customer offering available in the market.
Gemini places more weight on feeder reliability
Feeder services connect large deepsea hubs with ports that receive fewer or smaller mainline calls. As the Gemini Cooperation concentrates long distance services around selected terminals, the capacity and punctuality of those regional links become increasingly important to the end to end schedule.
A mainline vessel can arrive within its published window while a container still misses delivery because its connecting feeder has departed, been delayed, or omitted a port. Connection planning, terminal productivity, and buffer time therefore shape the actual reliability experienced by the shipper.
Additional Germany and Poland capacity reflects the growing importance of Baltic gateways and the manufacturing and distribution markets behind them. Gdańsk has also gained a call on an additional Far East service, strengthening its role in trade between Asia and Central and Eastern Europe.
Feeder expansion can improve frequency and provide alternatives when a sailing is disrupted, but it may also intensify competition where several operators add space to the same port range. Rates can weaken if regional demand fails to match the capacity available, prompting later changes to vessel size or frequency.
Port performance remains critical because feeder vessels often operate tight rotations between several terminals. Delays at one hub can affect subsequent calls, while a missed connection may leave a container waiting several days for another sailing.
The use of Laura Maersk introduces fuel supply into the operating calculation. A methanol capable engine can run on conventional fuel when suitable methanol is unavailable, but the emissions benefit depends on the production pathway and availability of the fuel actually bunkered.
Regional deployment can help carriers build experience in handling, bunkering, maintenance, and voyage planning while fuel infrastructure develops. Smaller feeder ships may also have more regular access to established ports than vessels operating long and variable deepsea rotations.
Cargo owners assessing the expanded network will examine port coverage, cut off times, connection windows, equipment availability, and recorded schedule performance. Additional nominal capacity is valuable only where containers can be accepted, transferred, and delivered within the operating plan.
The rise to 50,800 TEU shows how changes to alliance structures extend beyond the largest ships. Concentrating mainline calls creates additional work for the regional vessels that complete the maritime journey, placing feeder capacity at the centre of service reliability rather than at the edge of the network.
