DHL Group and Vinted are expanding their German logistics partnership, integrating a larger network of automated lockers, postal stations, and staffed service points into the resale platform’s delivery process.
Vinted users will gain access to approximately 41,000 DHL drop off and collection locations across Germany. The network includes Packstations, Poststations, DeinFach lockers, parcel shops, and postal service points, giving sellers and buyers alternatives to attended home collection and delivery.
DHL currently operates about 18,500 automated locations and plans to increase the network to more than 30,000 by 2030. The expansion accompanies rising parcel volumes and greater use of resale platforms, whose transactions often begin and end at residential addresses rather than professional fulfilment centres.
Sellers will be able to deposit parcels at Packstations around the clock, while buyers can collect items when convenient. Receiving a Vinted parcel at a locker will not require an existing Packstation account, with access provided through a collection code sent by email and later through the Vinted platform.
Integrating the location choice into the transaction gives DHL earlier visibility of the intended handover points. Parcel routing can be planned around a known locker or service point rather than relying on a residential delivery that may later fail or require redirection.
Out of home delivery changes the final mile by consolidating several recipients at one stop. A driver can load or empty multiple compartments during a single visit, reducing time spent travelling between addresses, searching for parking, and attempting delivery when nobody is present.
The commercial result depends on each site attracting enough volume. A lightly used locker can add route mileage and maintenance without producing meaningful consolidation, whereas a heavily used location may run out of suitable compartments and force parcels into neighbouring sites.
Capacity planning must account for parcel dimensions, collection speed, returns, unclaimed items, and the balance between inbound and outbound traffic. A locker bank filled with parcels waiting several days for collection cannot accept new deliveries even when daily demand continues to rise.
Resale platforms generate a distinctive first mile because private sellers rarely have scheduled carrier collections or access to merchant fulfilment systems. The locker or parcel shop becomes the point where an informal residential shipment enters a controlled national network.
Around 67% of German online shoppers have sold goods through an online marketplace, while approximately 70% of those transactions already use parcel shops or lockers. That established behaviour gives DHL a substantial base from which to expand automated capacity.
The partnership also allows Vinted to use physical infrastructure shared with other merchants and parcel flows rather than building a proprietary network. DHL can distribute the cost of lockers, software, servicing, and property across a broad customer portfolio.
Digital reliability remains central to the physical operation. Notifications, access codes, compartment assignment, rerouting, and exception handling must work consistently, since a functioning cabinet offers little value when the recipient cannot open it or the platform displays the wrong location.
DHL operates more than 38,500 electric delivery vehicles in Germany, allowing route consolidation and vehicle electrification to work together. The wider emissions result will also depend on how recipients reach the locker, since a dedicated car journey can offset part of the carrier saving.
Locations near supermarkets, workplaces, transport interchanges, and residential centres are more likely to support collection during an existing journey. Property access, electricity, communications, lighting, security, and pavement space will influence how quickly the network can expand in the most useful areas.
Growing use of local delivery infrastructure is also reshaping other retail networks. Amazon’s UK grocery fulfilment model combines central inventory control with a wider range of local delivery and collection options, reducing dependence on one final mile format.
DHL and Vinted are embedding locker delivery earlier in the transaction, which should improve routing accuracy and reduce the friction associated with changing delivery preferences after dispatch. The operational test will be whether the growing network can maintain compartment availability, service uptime, and convenient coverage as parcel volumes increase.
